During the Highland Clearances Badbea was one of the coastal crofts where villagers were relocated to following the push for land. Having lost their homes and tribal identities they turned to Christianity for a new, collective spirit. One of the inhabitants was nicknamed John ‘Badbea’, a preacher who made frequent correspondence with Scottish towns about the loss of his people
