Lerwick is named after the Old Norse description, ‘Ler’ meaning clay and ‘Vick’ meaning bay or inlet. The area is very heavily linked to Norse Culture and Norse Mythology in general, being the location of many ancient Norse myths such as the Mester Ship and the Mester Sea Worm.
