Two giants argued over the love of a mermaid, and began throwing rocks at each other. The mermaid told the giants to chase to her to the North Pole, whoever got there first would win her heart. Both the giants died on the way, but the rocks that they threw at each other became Muckle Flugga and the surrounding rocks.
